In Singapore, a residential air-conditioner performs 3 basic functions. Firstly, It helps to clean the air we breathe, through a filter, as the air is recycled within an enclosed space or room. Secondly, it helps to cool the warm air, bringing the temperature down to the desired level. Finally, it helps to reduce humidity, making the treated air more comfortable.
We spend a great deal of our time in an air-conditioned environment, be it at work or at home. Hence, it is crucial that our air-conditioners are cleaned regularly and thoroughly.
However, usually because of price wars or vested interests, many contractors resort to cutting corners and compromising service standards. This is not helped by a culture of looking for the cheapest bargains. We believe the only way to break out of this downward spiral is to educate the AC users on the important areas to look out for.

Detail 1:
Most contractors do not remove the fan blower wheel to clean. Instead, they brush and vacuum it within the FCU housing. This will only remove the surface dirt layer. Anything deeper and hard to reach cannot be removed. The air churned out by this fan blower wheel will therefore continue to spew out residual dirt particles even after servicing.
The only way to get a thorough clean is to dismantle, brush and rinse the fan blower wheel. Some AC brands have blower wheels that are easy to remove, whereas others may need more effort and time to take it out. This generally explains the reluctance of contractors to remove it.

Detail 2:
The wall behind the fan blower wheel is often filled with dirts and moulds. Be mindful and do not miss out on them because you cannot see them. Otherwise, continue to breathe in the air that passes over them.

Detail 3:
Corners, edges, grooves and other details are often the areas that are hard to reach and hard to clean. However, they are the best places to hide dirts and moulds. Cleaning them out is not difficult, but it certainly requires more effort, determination and time.

We have pointed out 3 problem areas which we think are the most disturbing. You may want to refer to our recommended 23-steps 'General & Routine Service Standards' if you insist on getting a thoroughly cleaned AC unit.
If your AC units are always well maintained and without such troubles, kindly give your AC contractor a thumb up. And it will be nice to help promote and introduce them.
