Contractor A says servicing at $15 per FCU. Contractor B says $45 per FCU. It is a tough choice. Cheap and good or cheap cannot be good?
Let us use the home cleaning service to illustrate. An adhoc cleaner charges $15 an hour, and $45 for 3-hours.
Example 1: Cleaner is tasked to clean the house for an hour @ $15. He cleans the general areas. He mops the floor, cleans the bathroom, brushes the stains off the WC and cleans the windows.
Example 2: Cleaner is tasked to clean the house for 3-hours @ $45. He cleans the general areas and other spots that need more attention. He mops the floor, cleans the bathroom, brushes the stains off the WC and cleans the windows. Above those, he scrubs away moulds hidden under the WC and corners around the bathroom, mops the floor under the couch and beds, vacuums the dust off the window grills, polishes the mirrors, wipes the shelves and irons the clothes.
Its about the details in the cleaning. Time is money. $15 will probably allow the contractor only enough time to clean the filters, clear the drainage pan and pipe, and wipe the cover. Of course, there are many cases of $45 services that will clean like a $15 service. Those ought to be shot, literally. Objectively, we do not want to penalise the cheap ones for not giving a good and detailed service. They are priced cheap for that reason. On the contrary, we adhor the overpriced ones.
Prices tell you little. Instead, find out more about the scope of work and the quality of service. We have done up a scope-of-work for general routine service, and it is a list of 23-steps for a thorough service on a wall-mounted system. You may take reference from there to review your contractors.
When all’s said and done, the main determinant is always ‘how clean do you want it’.
Note:
The figures of $15 and $45 are purely for ease of illustrations and we do not want to dictate market prices.
